L.E.S. art galleries (part 2)

It is time to talk about the Lower East Side, again. Today, the Angel Orensanz Foundation blog will share with you more art galleries of this blooming neighborhood with good exhibitions that you shouldn’t miss.

The first one is our homage to Andy Warhol‘s birthday. The art gallery Recession Art, in Clinton St, is exposing the works of Tate Foley, the young artist from Millerton, Pennsylvania in the exhibition 100% Stratification Guaranteed Or Your Money Back, a Warhol inspired, graphic collection of commercial objects. Well, mostly. The american artist plays with the concept of inequality of access to resources, producing two-dimensional works and objects that show the difference between classes.

After seeing this all-Americana exhibition, how about a trip to Indonesia? Oh, don’t worry, you just have to go southwest onto Grand St, where you will find Marc Straus. The art gallery is hosting Yogyakarta, an exhibition that brings together five major artists from the area. Jumaldi Alfi‘s blackboard painting, Fendry Ekel‘s iconic figures, Abdi Setiawan‘s edgy sculptures, Yuniza‘s local, but universal paintings, and Erianto‘s camouflage-inspired canvases.

Finally, after discussing inequality and exploring Indonesia, how about a talk about size? Size Matters: Rebecca Chamberlain, Ted Gahl, Cassie Raihl, Matt Rich, Michael Zelehoski is on display in DODGEgallery on Rivington St. The exhibition features artists that play with scale shifts without changing their materials or process. Each artist contributed two pieces, one large and one small, which invites the viewer to contrast and compare and see how size really matters.
